Before You Lift - TILE

Task

What needs to be done? How far? How often?

Individual

Am I capable of doing this safely?

Load

How heavy? What shape? Any handles?

Environment

Is the route clear? Floor conditions?

The Right Way to Lift

  1. Stand close to the load Feet shoulder-width apart, one foot slightly forward.
  2. Bend your knees, not your back Your legs are stronger than your back.
  3. Get a secure grip Use handles if available. Test the weight first.
  4. Keep the load close to your body Arms close, elbows in.
  5. Lift by straightening your legs Let your legs do the work.
  6. Keep your back straight throughout Look ahead, not down.

  • Squatting with straight back
  • Load close to body

When to Get Help

If you can't lift it safely alone, don't lift it alone.
